What are AILA's membership application processing times?
Here's a summary of what to expect when you apply for AILA membership or renew your existing membership.
For AILA's membership eligibility requirements, visit https://www.aila.org/eligibility.
To apply for AILA membership, create an AILA.org account and then complete an AILA Membership Application.
When you apply for AILA attorney membership for the first time, your membership account status will start in the status of "Pending Bar Check," a status showing that your application for membership is pending eligibility verification. You can check your membership account status at any time within your My AILA Page.
Even while your membership is pending bar check, you'll receive member discounts on AILA's publications, CLEs, and conference registrations. You won't yet have access to AILA's listservs or Message Center until your eligibility for membership is verified by AILA National. This process typically takes between one and five business days. When your eligibility is verified, your account status will advance to "Active - Pending."
As an Active - Pending member, your application is sent to your primary AILA Chapter for review. The Chapter has up to 90 days to get back to AILA National with any objections.
As stated in our bylaws, in this status you have all the same benefits as an Active - Approved member except you may not:
- Claim that you are an "active and approved" Member of AILA.
- Vote in any elections.
If there are no objections after the 90-day period is over, you become an Active - Approved member of AILA! You may advertise this status by displaying our logo, membership card or certificate according to their terms of use.
For instructions on obtaining your membership card or certificate, visit the Help Center article, Where can I get a Member Card, digital logo, or Member Certificate?
If you're renewing an existing membership account – whether the membership is currently active or not – your membership status will begin its term in the Active - Approved status. To preserve your history of membership with AILA and to avoid the above process, AILA encourages all renewing members to renew their existing membership accounts.
